Perigee Book, 2003 Basic Buddhist primer with many issues current teens are dealing with addressed from the Buddhist perspective. Zen Flesh, Zen Bones by Paul Reps, edited by Nyogen Senzaki The book that first introduced Jacqueline to Buddhism. Great for both adults and teens. |

It is a picture book as well as story and meditation instruction for children so very young children on up can enjoy this book. When my grandbaby was 17 months old she loved this book. Prince Siddhartha-the Story of the Buddha by Jonathan Landau, Wisdom Publications Nicole loved this book. It is a picture book with a very readable story. Buddha by Demi. Henry Holt and Company, 1996 Stories from the Buddha’s life with gorgeous illustrations. Zen Shorts by Jon J. Muth. Scholastic Press, 2005 Picture book for younger children where a panda is the Zen master. Beautiful watercolor illustration. Buddhist Tales retold by Sherab Chodzin & Alexandra Kohn, Fenn Publishing, 1997 Bedtime story size with lovely pictures. Kindness - A Treasury of Buddhist Wisdom for Children and Parents, collected and adapted by Sarah Conover, Eastern Washington University Press, 2001. A combination of oriental stories and Jataka tales. Jataka tales are stories about the Buddha during previous incarnations as various animals. They are similar to Aesop fables and many other indigenous tales where the animals teach a value. Buddhist Animal Wisdom Stories by Mark W. McGinnis, Weatherhill, 2004. More Jataka tales. A good bedtime book for kids old enough to sit and absorb a short story. The Pumpkin Patch- A Traditional Buddhist Tale by Heian, retold by Sybil Taylor. Beautifully illustrated book on the benefit of meditation. In a Spring Garden by Richard Lewis Haiku poems for children with pictures. This and other picture/poetry books are wonderful for teaching awareness in the moment. The Dharma Publishing house has a series of Jataka tales with beautiful pictures. |

The Life of the Buddha by Bhikkhu Nanamoli, Buddhist Publication Society Extensive use of the suttas to tell the story of the Buddha’s life. Thorough and scholarly. Gotama Buddha a biography based on the most reliable texts by Hajime Nakamura A scholarly approach to the story of the Buddha in two extensive volumes. What is the Dharma? by Sanghrakshita An Englishman who lived in India and was one of the first westerners to study and practice the Buddha’s teachings makes these teachings easily accessible and interesting. What is the Sangha? by Sangharakshita Also very readable and full of insight into sangha. Friends on the Path-Living Spiritual Communities, by Thich Nhat Hahn A comprehensive book on sangha. Peace is Every Step, by Thich Nhat Hanh A beautiful, poetic book on everyday mindfulness practice. Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life by Jon Kabat-Zinn A classic in the field of pain and stress relief through the practice of mindfulness meditation. Seeking the Heart of Wisdom: The Path of Insight Meditation by Joseph Goldstein, Jack Kornfield, Dalai Lama, and Robert Hall. Anything written by Joseph Goldstein or Jack Kornfield is clear and true to the practice of mindfulness. There are also great tapes of dharma talks by both of these teachers. The Four Foundations of Mindfulness by Venerable U Silananada The classic most comprehensive view on mindfulness I know of for those wishing to explore the subject deeply. The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche Jacqueline says, "If I could only have one book on a desert island this would be the book. Beautifully written, deep ansers to the question, 'What is life and what is death?'" This Thing Called You by Ernest Hollmes This book is a prayer. You can ride it all the way to peace, joy and divinity. The Pathway of Roses by Christian Larson He writes like an angel about spiritual principle. The Bhagavadgita - A Walkthrough for Westerners by Jack Hawley Beautifully translated. Clear, unadorned, practical, spiritual truths. One Dharma by Joseph Goldstein Wonderfully intelligent insights into the different schools of Buddhism and how they are merging yet remaining distinct in the west.
